The ALR first located the works in the catalogue of a Swiss auction house in 2014 and verified them using the Interpol database. An international police investigation began, following notification of the auction house, which withdrew the paintings from sale.

One of the paintings, Still Life with Roses by Johannes Evert Hendrik Akkeringa, had an estimate at £2700-4000, while the other, Three Children and a Dog by Johannes Zoetelief Tromp, had an estimate of £14,000-20,000.

The works have been recovered for the benefit of the original owner's insurer.
