“I had been thinking about it for a couple of years and when the voluntary redundancy programme was announced I decided it was the right time and I left at the end of March,” the former head of European Sculpture and Works of Art told ATG.

During his eight years at the London house where, in 2012, he became Sotheby’s youngest director and auctioneer, he notched up some notable successes.

These included such discoveries as the Syon Virgin, a 13th century ivory Virgin and Child from a Dutch private collection, as well as bringing to market such high-profile collections as the John Winter Collection and the Gustav Rau Collection.

“Currently I’m working from home building up a client base and collaborating with other dealers for exhibition,” said Bijzet.
