According to press reports, police found her body on the front lawn of her home yesterday morning with injuries so severe that they “thought she had been shot”.

A 52-year-old man from West Molesey has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently in police custody. He is thought to have known the victim.

Mercer, 50, worked at Mason's Yard silver specialists Bourdon-Smith who are exhibiting at the BADA Fair in Duke of York Square, just off the King’s Road in Chelsea.

Police said the murder investigation is in its early stages and a post mortem to establish the cause of death will take place in due course.

Mercer is understood to have sustained severe head injuries and the body lay overnight in the front garden of her home on Walton Road, a short distance from her front door.

President of BADA and Conservative MP Victoria Borwick said: “On behalf of the membership of BADA I would like to express our deepest sympathy to Robyn’s family, friends and colleagues.

“Robyn Mercer has been an integral part of the well-respected team at J H Bourdon-Smith for many years. I hope for the sake of the family that the person or people who committed this dreadful crime are soon brought to justice.”
