Waddington was a leading London dealer of Modern and Contemporary in the latter half of the 20th century.

Global President of Christie’s Jussi Pylkkanen describes Waddington as the art dealer who pioneered contemporary art in London. “Long before the proliferation of galleries and art institutions in the city, Leslie introduced the art world to artists from Jean Dubuffet to Patrcick Caulfield.”

The auction includes works by 23 artists, many of them leading artists of the 20th century such as Josef Albers, Alexander Calder and Francis Picabia.

Waddington passed away in December 2015.

He opened Waddington Galleries in 1966 and his extensive exhibition programme helped introduce a range of Modern, Post-War and Contemporary artists to London and the wider international art world.

The auction on October 4 is the first of two that will feature works from Waddington’s collection. The second will be held in November to coincide with Christie’s Modern British & Irish Art auctions.
