The female Bodhisattva seated in lalitasana with here right foot resting on a lotus flower issuing from a double lotus base, measured 6.75in (17cm) high. With her right hand lowered in varada mudra and her left raised in prithvi mudra, it had further fine details including the two lotus stems flowering at her shoulders.
The figure was adorned with jewellery inset with turquoise and wearing a tiara enclosing a high chignon.
Estimated at £5000-8000 at the auction on February 16, it drew competitive bidding in the room, on the phone and online. The auctioneers reported both European and Asian interest.
The seller was apparently present in the saleroom and naturally was delighted to see her find command such strong attention.
The latest result followed the auctioneers’ sale of a private collection of 30 Indian and Tibetan bronzes in August 2015.
The buyer's premium was 20%.
