The potentially landmark catalogue will include archaic ritual bronzes, Buddhist stone sculptures, scholar’s objects and classical paintings from perhaps the premier private collection of Asian art in Japan.
Six of the paintings belonged to Emperor Qianlong and are catalogued in the imperial Shiqu Baoji.
Christie’s plan an international touring schedule for the collection before its sale in New York including stops in Taipei (November 12-13), Hong Kong (November 24-29), Tokyo (December 8-9) and Osaka (December 12).
The sale will take place on March 16, 2017.
The Fujita Museum was founded in 1954 to exhibit over two thousand Japanese and Chinese works of art collected by the entrepreneur Denzaburo Fujita (1841-1912) and his sons.
The works now are being sold to help fund the construction of a new extension to the museum.
