The appointment follows the death last year of dealer Leslie Waddington, who was the foundation’s former representative.

Zwirner will work with the foundation when it chooses to sell works by its founders, textile artist and abstract painter and printmaker Anni Albers, and colour theorist, painter and printmaker Josef Albers.

The short list of four galleries included Pace, Dominique Lévy and Hauser & Wirth.

Nicholas Fox Weber, the foundation’s executive director, approached the four galleries, including all their names in an open letter and posing the same questions to each of them.

The David Zwirner Gallery will present an exhibition of Josef Albers’ (1888-1976) work in November 2016.
