The first episode of Sold! Inside the World’s Biggest Auction House, will be broadcast on BBC2 on November 19 at 9.10pm.

BBC publicity said the programme will follow the “drama and excitement behind iconic art auctions… to reveal how the world’s biggest auction house continues to command the crossroads between art, taste and money”.

The cameras filmed the company, its people and its auctions for nine months across the globe, from London to Dubai and from New York to Hong Kong, to “chart the highs and the lows” and to reveal how it attracts top consignors and buyers.

Christie’s said it had never before allowed cameras such full access.

The company has held a number of events to commemorate it is 250 years since founder James Christie hosted his first auction, back in 1766.

In the summer, it staged an exhibition displaying some of the greatest works that the auctioneers had sold over the years.

It also published a book, Going Once, which tells the story of 250 objects sold at the auction house.
