You could make the image even sharper by buying a lot included in the Tamlyns collectors’ sale taking place in Bridgwater, Somerset on May 11.
The auction features a collection of fire memorabilia compiled by the late Michael ‘Ginger’ Taylor who was in the fire service for over 25 years.
Among the axes on offer is one of five from the film set of The Shining. Taylor was involved in fire safety and security, and the water effects, for Elstree Studios just to the north of London, where the movie directed by Stanley Kubrick was made in 1978-79.
The fireman’s axe with long wood handle is estimated at £60-80.
Serial Bidder
Taylor collected for about 55 years. He was a regular customer at local auctions and specialist sales and had put together a collection of everything from badges, uniform and helmets to axes and fire marks.
The collection has been housed in museums but is now to be sold.
Another highlight, at a rather higher price range, is the Newsham pump pictured below. It dates from the 18th century and hails from St Albans where the Taylors originally lived before moving to the West Country.
The estimate is £5000-6000.
