The panel debate, New Perspectives on Connoisseurship - an open discussion with the Antiques Trade Gazette, on November 9 is hosted by Edinburgh auctioneers Lyon & Turnbull and was inspired by an article in the recent ATG Asian Art supplement.

The panel features Roger Keverne, the Mayfair-based specialist dealer, Pamela Kember, the head of arts and learning at pan-Asian organisation Asia House and Dr Peter Northover, Metallurgy and Archaeology, University of Oxford (retired).

Lee Young, head of Lyon & Turnbull's Asian Art department, said "the time is right" for a debate on the role of science in Asian art connoisseurship.

"The question of authenticity around Asian art, especially Chinese, is one that repeatedly comes up in our daily business," Young said.

"There are broadly two bodies of opinion on the subject: those who rely on their years of handling Asian art to establish authenticity and people who advocate the role of science in the process. Both sides of the debate will be represented at this event, and it promises to be a lively and educational experience."

The debate, to be held at Tomasso Brothers Fine Art Gallery in Duke Street, London, on November 9 at 2pm, will also cover changing tastes and the fresh perspective brought by a new generation of collectors.

Admission is free but as places are limited, booking is essential via londonevents@lyonandturnbull.com. Please note this is not a seated event.
