The suite comprised 14 high-back panelled and inlaid dining room chairs (four chairs shown here) which included a carver and lady's chair; an extending dining room table with four extra matching leaves contained within a pine cabinet; and a panelled back sideboard over three drawers flanked by panelled cupboard doors, 6ft 4in (1.93m) wide.
The whole suite was inlaid with stylised flowerheads and foliage in bone, stained bone and various coloured woods, and the table and sideboard also fitted with iron furniture. One inlay is shown in detail below.
This suite has been in the same family since being commissioned by Sir Frederick Whitley Thompson, JP MP, with the rose and thistle inlays representing both his Scottish and his wife's English ancestry.
At the sale on June 26, it sold to a dealer in the room who was bidding for an overseas client at some distance above the estimate of £10,000-20,000.
The buyer's premium was 18%.
