Topping the bill on May 29 at $260,000 (£161,490) was this fine quality example from Thomas Webb and Sons engraved by George Woodall, one of the factory's top artists in this medium. No buyer's premium was charged.
The 9½in (24cm) high vase, decorated in white on claret with a characteristic classically-derived scene of The Origin of Painting was signed G Woodall 1887 and by Webb. It also featured in one of the standard works on the subject, English Cameo Glass by R. and L. Grover.
"We knew we had something special and we fully expected it to reach and surpass $100,000, but when it climbed as high as it did we were just astounded," said the auctioneers' Jason Woody. The buyer was a collector from West Virginia.
A second Webb cameo vase by Woodall, 8½in (21cm) high and carved in white on blue with a young woman and a bird, made the joint second highest price of the sale at $45,000 (£27,950), along with a 17¼in (44cm) high signed Tiffany vase in red and iridescent green.
