The 3ft (90cm) high secretaire was the ultimate in Edwardian travel accessories. The top of each case opens to reveal a series of lidded compartments, drawers, a basket and a writing surface. The brass mounts and locks (numbered 061511and 064378) are all stamped for Louis Vuitton.

In storage for many years, both were in reasonably good condition when offered on June 17-18. There was some staining and water damage to the interior lining, general wear and tear to the handles and exteriors and both were painted with the initials of the original owner.

Competition for the pair boiled down to a phone and an internet bidder, with the former winning close to the top estimate of £25,000.

Louis Vuitton 'steamer' trunks are on something of a roll at the moment. A single example with unusual striped canvas sold for £30,000 at Christie's South Kensington in January.

The buyer's premium at Mallams was 20%.
