‘You Yangs Landscape 1’ by Fred Williams that sold for Aus$1.9m (£1.2m) at Bonhams in Sydney and made the highest price of the Grundy collection.
The price of the 4ft 6in x 5ft 11in (1.37 x 1.8m) oil on masonite painting was one of 12 new auction records for artists set at this sale of works collected by TV producer Reg Grundy held at Bonhams in Sydney on June 26.
Eighty-four per cent of the lots found buyers to net a premium-inclusive Aus$19.16m (£12.1m), the highest total for a single-owner art auction in Australia, surpassing the Aus$15.9m realised in 2000 by Christie's sale of the Harold E Mertz collection.
