A gold sword that belonged to the bodyguard of Empress Catherine II of Russia is estimated at £40,000-60,000 in Thomas Del Mar’s December 5 Antique Arms, Armour and Militaria sale in West Kensington, London.

His Serene Highness Ludwig Adolf Peter, Prince of Sayn-Wittgenstein (1769-1843) was famously known as 'The saviour of St Petersburg' after his defence of the city against Napoleon's 1812 invasion.

A year later, he was appointed commander-in-chief by the Tsar but replaced after two defeats.
