‘L.M.S/Best Way’ by Cassandre – $130,000 (£85,000) at Swann.

Contributing to the poster's appeal was its scarcity. It was one of only 50 copies ever printed according to the auction house.

As a result, it is likely the poster was never used commercially. Estimated at $70,000-100,000, the 3ft 5in x 4ft 2in (1.05 x 1.27m) horizontal-format tour-de-force topped the sale on November 8 selling for $130,000 (£85,530).

According to Artnet, the auctioneers also set the previous record for Cassandre when they sold an Au bucheron poster in October 2003 for $44,000.
