It is believed to have been part of a large service comprising some 95 pieces presented to Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830) by Charles X in recognition of the portraits he painted of the King and his son the Dauphin, in Paris in 1825.

Much of the service was dispersed by Christie's in 1834 after the Royal Academy turned down the offer to house it.

Measuring 8 x 11in (22 x 29cm), the pails whave been estimated at £4000-6000.
