A portrait of Princess Elizabeth by Dame Laura Knight (1877-1970) completed just a few years before she became Queen is to go under the hammer at Bloomsbury Auctions in London on September 12.
Purchased from the artist in 1969 by the current owner's father, the 15 x 11in (38 x 28cm) charcoal and red chalk work is signed and dated 1950.
The drawing is accompanied with a series of letters between the buyer and the artist negotiating the sale and its safe delivery, including one from Dame Laura in which she states "I value the drawing of 'Princess Elizabeth', who bloomed like a flower in the field, and loved a bit of fun when occasion permitted."
Also supplied is a letter from Edward Young, Deputy Private Secretary to The Queen, dated 25th February 2011, in response to a photograph of the drawing sent by the present owner to Buckingham Palace, confirming that it had been shown to Her Majesty and that she remembered sitting for the artist.
