While 19th century wheel, or banjo, barometers have not been the most sought after items at auction in recent times, 18th century stick barometers can still bring strong demand, as evidenced by the George III example pictured here.

The 3ft 3in (99cm) bow front barometer offered at Sworders at Stansted Mountfichet on July 12 was in less-than-perfect condition.

The urn finial was a replacement, there was damage and restoration to the sides beneath the pediment and some fading and splitting to the veneers.

Nevertheless, it was a good-looking piece by a respected maker, W & S Jones of Holborn, and, against a solid
£1000-1500 estimate, it ended up selling for £3700.
