Elizabeth Godfrey married two London silversmiths - first Simon Pantin and, after his death, Benjamin Godfrey. Again widowed, she registered her own work in 1741 and continued producing fine quality decorative silver until her death in 1758.

These 77oz casters - the pair standing 9½in (24cm), the single 11in (28cm) high - came to the sale from a West Sussex vendor with a conservative guide of £5000-7000.

Appealing for their large size, heavy gauge, original condition and as a set of three, there was significant interest in them prior to the sale and on the day from four strong telephone bidders and another in the room.

The successful buyer on the telephone was a leading UK silver dealer.

The buyer's premium was 20 per cent.
