On November 16 this Paris school ivory of the Virgin and Child Enthroned c.1250-1280 sold to London dealer Sam Fogg on behalf of a private collector at €5.6m (£5.05m).
Standing 15in (38cm) high, it was one of 24 lots from the descendant of Jean-Joseph Marquet de Vasselot (1871-1946), the former curator at the Louvre and director of the Cluny Museum.
The price betters that paid for an ivory diptych depicting the Passion of Christ from the collection of Georges Dormeuil sold by Sotheby's Paris in November 2008 for €3.6m (£2.57m). It, too, was bought by Sam Fogg who was acting for his client, the Thomson collection.
