The previous record for a Peploe was £440,000 for Roses at Christie's Scottish art sale in Edinburgh in 2008.
Offered for sale at Sotheby's Scottish sale in London April 22, Tulips, a 18 1/2 x 21 1/2in (47 x 55cm) oil on canvas, dated from c.1912, when Peploe had a studio in Paris, and had a notable provenance.
Initially owned by David Cargill (1872-1939), a well-known collector of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings, it was later sold by Aitken Dott in Edinburgh to another eminent collector, William Bowie (1911-2008) and purchased by the latest vendor, a collector, in 2008.
Signed, titled and inscribed on the reverse, S J Peploe, Tulips, 278 Boul. Raspail. Paris, the still life had been estimated at £300,000-500,000 and sold to an anonymous buyer.
A new auction record was also set at the Sotheby's sale for a work by Peploe's contemporary Francis Campbell Boileau Cadell (1883-1937), when Florian's Café, Venice sold to an anonymous buyer for £460,000, against an estimate of £150,000-250,000.
The buyer's premium at Sotheby's was 25/20/12 per cent.
