Bought by his old club Manchester United, it will join Bobby Charlton's winners' medal which is on loan at the club museum. The former midfielder, now 68, was apparently out buying shoes with his wife as the sale took place in Edinburgh.

The medal, pictured here, had been estimated at £100,000-150,000.

From the same collection, Alan's Ball's shirt from the 1966 final, which Stiles had gained in a swap, sold for £44,000 against a £20,000-30,000 estimate.

Bonhams will be holding their first specialist sporting sale in Edinburgh on November 11. The auction will feature a sporting pictures, ceramics, silver as well as taxidermy and fishing tackle.
