What we can be sure of is that the 240 exhibitors from 15 countries have earmarked the very cream of their stock for this most prestigious of fairs, which closes on March 22.

For example, Mount Street, Mayfair dealers Blairman will take to the Dutch city this large English japanned and gilt-decorated cedar stand, seen here, dated to the first quarter of the 19th century, 3ft 2in (97cm) high and priced at £28,000.

It is believed to have been made for Sir Francis Burdett, who in 1793 married Sophia, daughter of the banker Thomas Coutts.

Last week, as he set off for Holland, Martin Levy, head of Blairman, described Maastricht as "the most wonderful fair in the world" and, regarding potential business, felt "it was good going on the back of the Saint Laurent sale".

But he knows even this fair is not immune to economic downturns and warned: "There is business going on, but it is not easy."
