Using an image of the Democrat candidate above the word 'Progress', the 2ft 10in x 22in (86 x 56cm) work by the LA street artist Shepard Fairey (b.1970) was a Warhol-esque screenprint using colour-shadows from the American flag.

It was one of 350 signed posters published by Obey Giant of Los Angeles, while another signed Shepard Fairey print, using the same image of Obama but above the word 'Hope' and from an edition of 600, made $2700 (£1770) at the November 5 sale.

Such was the popularity of these posters during the election campaign, the original editions of the prints went on to be mass produced and now number over 400,000.
