Mr Banfield is one of the most respected experts in the barometer world and has published many books covering the history and development of English and Continental instruments and their makers. One of his books was devoted exclusively to this former museum collection - The Banfield Family Collection of Barometers, a 1995 publication which includes most of the barometers and other scientific instruments offered in the sale.

John Hallifax is recorded by Banfield as being born in 1694 and dying in 1750. Perhaps the best known barometers from Hallifax's workshop are those that take the form of a longcase clock, however, several of this more unusual form are known. It sold for £16,000 (plus 19.5 per cent premium).
