As first reported in ATG No 1741, May 27, the Faculty of Media Art and Society have received approval for three new degrees: Art, Design and Business; Art, Design and Cultural History and Art, Design and Practices of Display.
The new BA (Hons) degrees, designed to update the Fine Arts Valuation degree that was suspended last spring, offer a range of subject areas devised to take into account the many changes that have taken place in the art and antiques world in recent years, especially changes in government legislation, collecting patterns, marketing strategies and new technology.
The launch will take place at 2pm in the University’s study collection of art and design objects housed on the second floor of the John Everett Millais Building. Proceedings will be opened by Hampshire-born artist Graham Ovenden who studied at Southampton College of Art and is a pioneer of Victorian photography, early sound recordings and Titanic memorabilia.
Anyone interested in the new courses is invited to the event to talk to the staff and a range of guests from the world of art and antiques. Fine art auctioneers and past students of the University’s valuation courses are particularly welcome to renew social contacts and to hear a presentation by the teaching staff on the nature and content of the new degrees. A new programme of Continuing Professional Development for the coming academic year will also be announced.
