He is also holding his own among the mainstream of some of today's hottest-selling Contemporary artists.

At the 287-lot Contemporary sale at Sotheby's Olympia on October 18, Banksy provided three of the top five results, including the top lot, Mona Lisa, a signed acrylic and spraypaint on canvas re-interpreting the classic painting by Leonardo da Vinci, which set an auction record for the artist.

Executed in 2003 in an edition of up to three, the 2ft 6in x 2ft 6in (76.5cm x 76.5cm) canvas soared past its £20,000 upper estimate to sell at £48,000 plus 20/12% buyer's premium.

The artist's six Warhol-style screen prints, entitled Kate Moss, provoked a similar response, selling at a triple-estimate £42,000.
