BADA secretary general Elaine Dean, who had spent months planning the event, said they were disappointed but had not garnered enough support from the furniture trade: “We did have 40 or so
dealers with a mixed range of disciplines sign up, but we could not get commitment from others.”

She said that at least some of those who had not signed up said that notice of the fair was too short.

As ATG’s Letters column has shown, others were concerned about the event running alongside the Winter Antiques Show – a juxtaposition to which some members of the US trade took strong exception – and there were some who objected to the choice of Sotheby’s as a venue.

Elaine Dean emphasised that the event was only postponed, not cancelled, and the BADA would be consulting widely with members before drawing up plans for a suitable alternative.
