Their Art Award for Contemporary design at Collect 2005, the Crafts Council’s international art fair for contemporary objects at the Victoria and Albert Museum which ran from January 12-17, went to jeweller Evert Nijland, showing with Galerie Louise Smit, Amsterdam, and ceramicist Martin Bodilsen Kaldahal, showing with Galleri Nørby, Copenhagen.

Chairman of the judges Robin Woodhead, Sotheby’s Europe and Asia chief executive, said: “In bringing together such an impressive group of works from all corners of the world, the Crafts Council and the V&A have brought into focus the enormous talent and innovation that is to be found in the best of contemporary craft. We are delighted to have been a part of this important – and exciting – initiative to promote the art of craft.”

The Sotheby’s Award funds the purchase of a work (or group of works) by an artist to be purchased at Collect and donated to the V&A’s permanent collection. Sotheby’s have undertaken to fund the award, which is worth £5000, for three years.

The award continues a tradition of support for contemporary crafts by the London auction house. From 1997 to 2003, the year before Collect was launched, Sotheby’s mounted Contemporary Decorative Arts, an annual curated selling exhibition in their Bond Street rooms at the start of each year.
