Mallett, who were founded in 1865, opened their Manhattan showrooms two years ago at 929 Madison Avenue and 74th Steet. They converted the whole building into a series of elegant showrooms to show their familiar stock of mainly English and Continental furniture and works of art.
The shop found immediate favour and Lanto Synge, chief executive of Mallett Plc, says that due to the “tremendous interest and enthusiasm” shown for the Madison Avenue venture the company have acquired a whole floor of an adjacent building.
This will enable them to create further showroom space across two houses.
The extra floor will also allow Mallett to show a wider range of pictures than those currently on show at the gallery at 929 Madison Avenue. In addition there will be a space dedicated to a virtual reality display of the company’s entire stock, a facility especially useful to the decorating trade.
Another venerable London firm, S. Franses, are also expanding to New York.
Founded in 1909 and now based in Jermyn Street, St. James’s, the Franses Gallery are one of Europe’s leading dealers in fine carpets and tapestries and have recently opened a satellite, 1000 square feet gallery at 132 East 61st Street, between Park and Lexington Avenues.
The firm have long had a strong American customer base and the new outlet will help them better service these clients, which include many museums and decorators.
The Franses Gallery, New York will be inaugurated officially with an exhibition titled Giant Leaf Tapestries of the Renaissance 1500-1600, which opens on October 21.
Mallett to expand further in New York
MALLETT, one of Bond Street’s most famous names, are to expand their New York branch, with work hopefully starting in November.
