William Randolph Hearst had Murrough House in mind as an Irish hideaway when he bought it in the early 1930s. However, Hearst never lived in the early 19th century Galway city mansion and, in fact, relinquished it without charge when Galway Corporation was re-constituted around 1936. The new Mayor of Galway, Martin Reddington, travelled to the US to accept the gift from Hearst in person.

The house, with its 20 acres of woodland and private beach, has recently being sold by publisher William Gavin, and some of its contents will be offered at a ‘private’ auction on Sunday, March 22. Rather than employ the services of an auctioneer, the sale will be organised by Mr Gavin’s son Coey. A total of only 80 lots will go under the hammer – some of them large multiples, others individual highlights such as a Victorian 20-light chandelier delivered by horse and cart from Waterford over 150 years ago.

Bidding is by invitation only and potential buyers can register their interest at www.galwayauction.com or by calling 00 353 (0)91 555559.
