Today this cavalcade is admirably continued by RWS member John Newbury (b. 1934). His small, deft watercolours, which are created quickly on the spot, usually in one sitting, very much fulfil the true principles of the medium and, on occasion, echo the brushwork of artists such as RP Bonington (1802-1828) and TS Boys (1803-1874).
I revere Newbury's work and recommend a view of his 75 watercolours taking place until September 25 at the Bourne Gallery in Lesbourne Road, Reigate, Surrey. Most are priced at under £1000, with Trevi Fountain, Rome, illustrated right, costing £950.
Newbury's work at Bourne Gallery
THIS year marks the 200th birthday of the Royal Watercolour Society and many past members, such as William Callow (1812-1908), have been masters in portraying the detail and differing surface textures of building.
