The mug that he designed for Wedgwood to commemorate the 1951 Festival of Britain has similarities to the work of Ravilious and Bawden and is a striking endorsement of the post-War drive for British trade, industry and art.
The image of The Crystal Palace from the Great Exhibition flanked by the Skylon at the heart of the South Bank are both symbols of new ideas and developments. Both have disappeared into history but will remain with us on this striking little mug that carries an estimate of £200-300 at Sworder’s 20th century collectors’ sale at Stansted Mountfitchet on May 25.
