The Derby-based organisers, promoters of the Antiques in the Park events at Kedleston Hall and Sandringham House, are proposing a Monday-Tuesday fair at another disused airfield, at Wymeswold, 22 miles west of Newark on the A46 and eight miles from the M1.
Alan Cartwright of Jaguar says he has been contemplating an antiques and collectables fair at the spartan Wymeswold site since 2002. “We always thought it would be an excellent venue,” he told the Antiques Trade Gazette, “but now we have the perfect opportunity to launch it.”
That chance has arisen now clear air exists between the two events since DMG’s decision to move Newark to a Thursday-Saturday slot and Swallow’s announcement that Swinderby would go it alone a week earlier.
Overseas dealers, who previously attended both events over five days, are unhappy at the three-day midweek gap that now exists between the events. Will a third bridging fair be the answer?
“We want to give dealers the opportunity to carry on attending two fairs, or even all three, without having to wonder what to do for three days,” said Mr Cartwright. “People travel a long way at great expense [for Swinderby and Newark]. This should help keep them in the area.”
The new fair – the inaugural event is set for January 31-February 1 – will run on the Monday-Tuesday slot vacated by Newark, with standholders admitted to set up on the Sunday.
