AS a follow-up to last week’s report on the Conan Doyle collection sold at King Street in May, I bring belated news of The Adventure of the Sussex Vampire.
Sold for $350,000 (£190,215) to an unnamed UK dealer at Christie's New York on June 9 was Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's autograph manuscript of the Holmes story first published in Strand Magazine in January, 1924, and later included in The Case Book of Sherlock Holmes of 1927.
Holmes, of course, was extremely sceptical of the notion of vampirism in rural Sussex, exclaiming "Rubbish, Watson, Rubbish! What have we to do with walking corpses who can only be held in their grave by stakes driven through their hearts?" The manuscript was bound in white buckram gilt for the author.
