The sale wasn't the most spectacular the Sussex firm has enjoyed but, once again, strong competition from overseas helped keep the action ticking over.
The pistol, with an 18 1/2in (47cm) barrel and fruitwood stock inlaid with staghorn and ivory pellets was one of some 30 foreign triumphs in the 470-lot sale. Against home competition it sold at £2300.

BILLED as the top gun on the catalogue cover of the September 1 sales at Lewes arms and armour specialists Wallis & Wallis (15% buyer's premium), this c.1649 German or Dutch 34-bore wheel lock pistol lived up to its reputation.
