In the latter category was this early 19th century mahogany bracket clock, right, signed Walter, London.
Standing 18 1/2in (47cm) tall from pagoda top to compressed gilt ball feet, it was inlaid throughout with brass scrolls and featured pierced brass side windows. It sold at £1300.
Furniture took the other four-figure bids including the sale’s top seller, a late 18th/early 19th century mahogany oval drum-type rent table, inlaid and strung with satinwood and boxwood. Measuring 5ft (1.52m) across, it featured the usual frieze fitted all round with alternate drawers and half drawers, all with lion-mask ring handles, and raised on an octagonal support and quadruped base with brass paw feet and castors. Always likely to impress it sold at what appeared to be a reasonable £2300.
Clock strikes note of quality
AT 1620 lots, the January 27-28 sale held by Keys (10% buyer’s premium) at Aylsham, was a little smaller than many of the Norfolk rooms’ mammoth events but it followed a familiar pattern. Speedy selling of two- and three-figure pieces was supported by a handful of better offerings selling into four figures.
