The white skull within a blue D embroidered on green marks its wearer as a member of D Troop No.3 Commando. Little is known of the badge's history but the design is illustrated in the literature on the subject and this was the first believed to have come onto the market. At £3575 (in excess of £4000 with premium) it sold to an English collector.
Badge of special forces at work
GIVEN Hitler’s order to execute any commando captured during WWII, it was unusual for British special forces to wear much in the way of identification. That goes some way to explaining the rarity of this cloth badge (or formation sign) seen at a postal auction conducted by Bosley’s (15% buyer’s premium) on July 21.
