The auction contained all manner of entries including leather flying jackets, pre-First World War binoculars, vintage soda siphons and equally vintage sporting equipment as well as ceramics, furniture, clocks, paintings and prints.
Leading the furniture was 2ft 4in (71cm) wide Regency rosewood chiffonier which, despite damage, sold over the phone to a South of England dealer at £1750 while a three-piece harlequin Arts and Crafts bedroom suite looked good value for money at £700.
Ceramics salvaged from dusty cellar shelves included a damaged 18th century Newcastle pottery creamware mug, which made £210, and a Satsuma pottery vase which fetched £340, while one of the most unusual entries was a set of three Harden Star Hand Grenade fire extinguishers in a wirework holder which sold at £230.
£48,000 haul from the attics and cellars of country house
While Dee, Atkinson & Harrison's (10% buyer's premium) August 20 sale did not comprise the best quality works from Ganton Hall, Scarborough, there was no shortage of competition for the there-to-sell and fresh-to-market residual contents from its attics and cellars ensuring that the 483-lot outing eclipsed its £30,000 estimated hammer total at £48,000.
