With work expected to take just over a year, it means that by 2005 the palace will be able to exhibit the entire 20,000 exhibit collection, including the Chinese works, brought together by Augustus the Strong in the early 18th century, and which formed the basis of porcelain production in the West.
The Zwinger itself was reconstructed in 1952, having been destroyed in the intense bombing campaign over Dresden during the Second World War. Tours of the palace are being set up for the Autumn.
