Published by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, Guidance to Exporters of Cultural Goods is a six-page guide which starts with a flow chart to help exporters identify whether they need permission to take works of art and other objects out of the country and, if so, what sort of licence they require.

Levels of permission range from a complete European Union licence application, through a complete UK licence application, to an Open General Export Licence to an Open Individual Export Licence.

The guide also contains a list of cultural object categories and their threshold values, above which special licences are required.
Additional information includes a list of EU member states and territories where the rules apply as well as a code of practice that applies to the Export Licensing Unit.
