The event is the first Dealers v Auctioneers football match, which is being staged at the Bank of England Sports Ground just outside Richmond Park in Roehampton, south west London.
Kent dealer Lennox Cato came up with the idea at the beginning of the year and together with fellow dealer Denzil Grant decided to put together a trade team to take on the auctioneers in aid of charity. If successful, it could become an annual event.
The Gazette have agreed to be the main sponsor for the match, which kicks off at 7pm and will be accompanied by a barbecue. Sotheby’s and Country Life have also backed the match.
Up to 30 players will take to the pitch for each side on a rolling basis. Among those named for the dealers’ team are Mr Cato and Mr Grant, Angus Adams of Chevertons, Edenbridge, Kent, Chris Cowen from Brighton, Adam Kay of Ian Butchoff Antiques, Ledbury Road, west London, Keith Finch of London, Jeremy Green of Petworth’s the Canon Gallery, Guy Apter of Apter Fredericks, London, Adrian Butterworth of Reindeer Antiques, Paul Martin of Robin Martin Antiques of Ledbury Road, Nick Arkell of Dorking and Willie Clegg of The Country Seat in The Cotswolds.
Paul Campbell of Gorringe’s Lewes heads the auctioneers’ team. Among those playing alongside him will be David Holmes of the Fine Art Auction Group’s Edgar Horne’s, Phillip Taylor, Aaron Dean, Tim Taylor, Ross Mercer, Anthony Willard and Tom Plant, all of Gorringe’s, Jussi Pylkkanen, David Moore, Gerard Barrett, Andy Waters, Pat Galligan and John MacDonald, all of Christie’s, Chris Colnalgi, Lawrence Bright and Duncan Rouart, all of Sotheby’s, and Roger Mead.
Funds raised will go to cancer charities and those who can’t go to the match but want to donate can send a cheque written out to Mr Cato, who will issue them with a receipt, to Lennox Cato Antiques, 1 The Square, Church Street, Edenbridge, Kent TN8 5BD. The match starts at 7pm, this Friday, September 5, and the entry to the ground is in Bank Lane, off Priory Lane, which in turn is off the Upper Richmond Road between Roehampton and East Sheen.
