The top price here was also a gold-ground painting from Bologna: The Madonna and Child with 13 Angels, packed into a 2ft 3in x 1ft 11in (72 x 60cm) frame, painted by Jacopo di Paolo around 1380.

It is a fundamental work for an understanding of Bolognese painting of the late 14th century and of Giotto’s influence on it, justifying the €100,000 (£69,200) it attracted.

Also of interest in this sale was a 4ft 1in (1.2m) high terrestrial globe supported by a carved giltwood eagle, made by Vincenzo Coronelli in Venice in 1696 that fetched €35,000 (£24,220).

A 17th century central Italian walnut centre table on six lyre legs, measuring 4ft 7in x 6ft long (1.4 x 1.8m) made €36,500 (£25,260).
