The next will be held this weekend on May 17 and 18 and it will be 10 years to the day that ceramics dealers Robert and Carol Pugh metamorphosed into Towy Antiques Fairs, moved from Bath to Carmarthen and launched a fair which very much upped the profile of the Welsh antiques scene.
The new fair found a receptive audience right away and although it is a showground event Robert and Carol keep a close eye on standards and the balance of stock.
In this respect it greatly helps that they are dealers themselves (in which capacity you will see them on their customary stand at Olympia next month).
The Carmarthen fair at the county showground is now held five times a year and if one has to highlight a single factor in its success I would cite variety. Being Wales, pottery and porcelain are always to the fore but the Pughs have built up a good roster of specialities in such diverse areas as telephones, fishing tackle, teddy bears and treen.
There is a handful of new exhibitors among the 160 at this week’s fair, among them local dealer Tim Bowen and Michael Lloyd from Llandysul.
Admission is £3.50.
