ALSO showing at the National Gallery of Scotland and from February 21-April 27 is this British Museum exhibition, its final showing and the catalogue to which was the winner of the 2002 Eric Mitchell Prize for the Best Exhibition Catalogue 2001-2002. This features the work of a number of outstanding printmakers of the day at a time when printmaking demonstrated the very international character of the artists working in Italy, many of whom came from the Low Countries. This was also the time when large-scale commercial print publishing was first established.

This catalogue, the only existing survey of this period of Italian printmaking in any language, is based on extensive and hitherto largely unexplored documentary record. For historians of the print and students of the Renaissance, this thoroughly researched catalogue by its author, senior lecturer in the Department of Fine Art at Edinburgh University, offers a complex and largely unknown body of material with great clarity and good sense, attributes which many cataloguers supremely lack.
