A 40-lot English probate collection of predominantly 18th century Chinese monochromes is sure to generate international interest from specialist dealers and collectors when it comes under the hammer in Suffolk auctioneer Durrants’ 800-lot sale on December 5.

Entered from the Suffolk estate of a 94-year-old collector, the
consignment is in good condition and is to be offered with no reserves.

The attractively pitched estimates range from £200-300 to £1000-2000 and the monochromes include celadon, yellow, teadust, turquoise, dark blue, red and flambé glazes. A selection of these monochromes is illustrated here.

Although the collector bought from specialist Dutch dealers Vanderven and Vanderven Oriental Art as well as London dealers Bluetts, he acquired much of the porcelain before WW2 in India, where he was stationed as an army doctor. There he bought from the Delhi markets or accepted the porcelain as part payment for his medical services.
Also offered is his seven-lot collection of Mughal daggers.
