Guest speakers include Sir Nicholas Serota, the director the Tate; Charles Saumarez Smith, director of the National Gallery; and Sir Timothy Clifford, director of the National Galleries of Scotland. Other leading museums providing guest speakers include the Rijksmuseum, the State Museums Berlin, the Hermitage, the Scuola Normale, Pisa and the Aga Khan Trust, Geneva. Dr David Starkey, Jeremy Paxman, Andrew Marr, John Tusa and Anna Somers Cocks of The Art Newspaper will also take the podium. Their debates will be aired as Sir Nicholas Goodison, former chairman of the Art Fund, puts the final touches to his report on saving art for the nation before he submits it for consideration to the Treasury. Any measures adopted are expected to be incorporated in the forthcoming finance bill.
Art Fund host conference as report on future policy nears completion
THIS week sees a two-day international conference at The Savoy in London to mark the centenary of the National Art Collections Fund. Saving Art for the Nation, A Valid Approach to 21st-Century Collecting? runs on Tuesday and Wednesday, November 11 and 12, and will focus on whether it matters if works of art that were once the pride of British private collections go overseas and how they should be rescued for the nation if we believe it is important to keep them here.
