Founded in 1976 and still run by New York-based Stella Show Management the Waterloo Antiques Fair has evolved into an informal, popular fixture with a good selection of modestly priced antiques.
Expect quilts, vintage fishing tackle, old tools, postcards by the thousands and collectables galore, but the fair is also a serious market for oak and country furniture. And over the years there are other specialities which have built up their own following, such as the restored and refinished old trunks of Maryland’s Mina Gunter and the stackable oak glazed bookcases brought from Philadelphia by James McDonald.
The latter were used from around 1900 in lawyers’ offices and are now in demand again as collectors’ display cases.
Parking is plentiful and free, but no pets on the field. Admission is $6.
Americans finally meet their Waterloo
MORE than 200 dealers, mainly from New England, will gather at the Concert Field of Waterloo village, Stanhope, New Jersey over the weekend of May 17 and 18 for the state’s largest and oldest outdoor fair.
