The county’s Trading Standards fair trading team, led by David Scott, revealed that almost 100 per cent of the dealers attending had registered under the Act with only a handful of casuals failing to register despite efforts by organisers DMG to cover all eventualities.
With a poster campaign set to go ahead during the busy trading months, with car boot sales and outdoor fairs and markets about to start up, Mr Scott is confident that their approach has been the right one and that, with time, the Act will be fully accepted because of its easy to use conditions.
The softly-softly approach will continue but dealers are advised to register for selling and regular buying in the county if they have not already done so. Mr Scott accepts that it will take a full 12 months for the Act to be fully integrated into the trade’s culture but is very happy with the results so far.
Other places, which have their own sets of rules and regulations, where dealers need to register are (in order of enactment) South Yorkshire, the County of Merseyside, Greater Manchester, Humberside, Lancashire, Hereford City, Worcester City, North Yorkshire, Newcastle and Scotland.

The second Detling fair of the year (February 23-24) indicates that the trade is not being put off by the Kent Act.
